Henry Smith and Susannah Bradshaw

Susannah Bradshaw

Her maiden name is not proved, but the son of Mary Smith and Samuel Dennis Buchanan in Carter Co., MO, gave Mary's mother's name as Susanna Bradshaw. I can find no Mary Smith who fits as well as our Mary who was in the right place at the right time and was about the correct age. (MO Death Cert. #37246, Mary Buchanan, d. 16 Nov, 1911, dated 18 Nov 1911, Carter Co., MO; data from: A. J. Buchanan; parents Henry Smith, b. TN, and Susanna Bradshaw, b. TN. Mary b. TN, 12 Oct 1830.)

According to a relative who knew the family in MO, Susanna died after Jul 24, 1860, when she sold all but 8 acres (in MO) to her son William.

Children

Censuses after Henry's death

1850HnTNp409B: Richard Smith, 21 TN, Susanna Smith, 50 VA, Martha 23 TN, Mary 16 TN, Ann 14 TN, Elizabeth 13 TN (The first census with all family names)

1860CaMOp942: age given as 75 apparently incorrectly since she was only 50 in 1850 and daughter Elizabeth was only. Mary, 25, Ann, 23,Elizabeth, 21, Martha Housden, 31, and Martha's children Mary, 8, and William P., 2, also in family.

Henry Smith

Henry was born about 1795 in VA, and Susanna was born about 1799 or 1800 in VA. I know nothing more definite about them before the marriage. Henry's parents are unknown, but I believe his father was likely Francis Smith.

Some people have proposed the Henry Smith who married Susannah Keeling 18 December 1820 in Prince Edward County, VA, as our ancestor, but this cannot be correct if our Henry was the man in Stewart County, TN, or Montgomery County, TN, in 1820 as seems almost certain.

Census Data

NOTE: The Stewart County person and the Montgomery County person are possibly the same. The family could have moved a short distance during the census period.

1820StTNp22: 100100// 00100 Henry Smith Next neighbor is Francis Smith, who is probably his father: 011301// 00101. Also John Randle, James English, Samuel Smoot, C. Buckhannon, all people who were our Henry Smith's neighbors in Henry Co, are in this area.

1820MontTNp228or187: 100100 // 10200 Henry Smith (Same page as Joseph and Richard Bradshaw)

1830HnTNp52: 221001 // 110001 Henry and Susannah 30-40, Joseph 10-15, William and ?? 5-10, Samuel and ?? (Richard?) less than 5, daughter? 5-10, Martha less than 5 (If Susan was their (or Henry's) daughter, she would have been slightly over 10 and could have been listed as 5-10.)

1840HnTNp463: 0120101 // 2200101 Enumerated just before Abijah Lax; John Smith enumerated a few lines later (relationship?).

Evidence for Francis Smith as Henry's father is fairly weak, but, in addition to his living probably next door to an older Francis in 1820, two of Henry's grandchildren were named Francis Marion. They could, of course, have been named in honor of the Revolutionary hero but their births were several years later than the time this would have been likely.
