Wilsons

I don't descend from any of these families but have close family ties to the Wilsons and Paschalls. Most of my data are on the descendants of John Brent Wilson (born about 1818 in NC), and I collected that because it seemed brothers and sisters of my ancestors were marrying Wilsons, and all led back to him. In fact, one of the marriages was to him, that of Mary Ann Shipley, widow of Thomas J. Chilcutt. I have attempted to provide references for censuses, marriages, sometimes deaths or births. In censuses and some other citations, the following abbreviations may be used:
* HnTN = Henry County, Tennessee
* WeTN = Weakly County, Tennessee
* CaKY = Calloway County, KY
* GrKY = Graves County, KY
* JaMO = Jackson County, MO

Gen. 1 John Brent Wilson, born about 1818, NC, died bet. 1880 and 1900, CaKY

Note: not from my own research, but Clarence McDaniel, the recognized authority on Paschalls, states that John Brent's parents were William Wilson and Rebecca Berry, with Rebecca's mother being a Paschall. Clarence's research shows that William's parents were Henry Wilson and Rachel Paschall.
(Note from JFA: almost all Paschalls whose names end with two 'L's are descended from William Paschall and Reliance Dennis. They are related to many of the single L Paschals.)

The children of John Brent Wilson and Sarah Elizabeth Kelly, whose maiden name is provided by KY death certificates of sons Lafayette (#2968) and John W. (#25436), were: William Duncan, Jesse, John W., James D., Elizabeth, Jonas J., General Lafayette. There may have been others who died in childhood. Children's data are below in Generation 2.

I don’t trust data from many genealogists without verifying it, but Clarence was probably one of the most careful among us and can be relied upon.

Gen. 2

2a. William Duncan, born 15 September 1841, died 21 Mar 1936. He was married to Martha C. Cochran. William and Martha may have had several children, but I followed only daughter Susan, born about 1872. Susan married Isaac Henderson Adams, the brother of my great-grandmother Lydia Elnora Adams.

"William Duncan Wilson, son of John Brent Wilson and Sarah Elizabeth Kelly, born 15 September 1841, Calloway County, Kentucky., died 21 March 1936, Conyersville Henry County, Tennessee. He married Martha (Cochran) Blain, 30 November 1870. Martha was born 31 January 1847, Graves County Kentucky., died 15 Jan 1909 Henry County, Tennessee./Calloway County, Kentucky. They are both buried in the Hazel Cemetery, Calloway County, Kentucky. . . . ." --- Information in email from Stephen L. King

1880HnTNp180a: William D. lived in Henry Co: CD 13, ; John W. and Jesse G. and their families lived in Henry County, CD 14, p. 222a. Rebecca Wilson, 39, with same birth info as John W., lived in his family.
Jesse's family included Lavenia Willis, 49, same birth info.

2b. Jesse, born 1843. Based on initial information I found, I concluded that he was the husband of Matilda Cochran, but Matilda's husband may have been a different Jesse (see the next paragraph). I have not done additional investigation.

From Pamela Humphreys's death certificate lists her parents as Matilda Cochran and Jesse Wilson; however, a Wilson researcher provides evidence that Pamela's father was Jesse Paschall Wilson, son of William Wilson and Rebecca Berry, which would make Jesse Paschall Wilson John B.'s brother and this Jesse’s uncle.

2c. John W. born 12 June 1846

2d. James D., born Oct 1845-1848: Known as Lying Jim, according to my mother Louise Moody Alexander and Jim's grandson Jesse Houston Wilson. Wives were Malissa Arbell(a) Stagner and Eliza T. Clark.

James D. first married Malissa Arabell(a) Stagner, daughter of Talbert and Malinda and twin to Falissa Isabella (marriage 2 December 1870, W. H. Cole JP, BM W. F. Wilson). Jim's and Arabella's children were John Wesley and Luther C., both born 2 November 1872, per Luther's Tennessee Death Certificate #18850.

James D. married Eliza T. Clark, daughter of Joshua Clark and Mary Oliver (marriage 15 September 1880). Jim's and Eliza's children were Bettie, born Jan 1887, Nola J., born December 1889, Lemon Joshua, born 7 September 1892, Anna Belle, born 10 December 1896, and William Ed, born 8 October 1884/1885.

1860CaKYp29 (See John Brent) shows James (Jim) as age 10, born in NC.

Gen 3 descending from James D.

Wife: Malissa Arbella Stagner

3a. John Wesley, born 2 November 1872, married Mattie Jane Dowdy, daughter of Benjamin Dowdy and Lovill Wright, 12 April 1913. Wesley and Matt had children including Cora, born Jan 1898 (married William Arlander “Lander” Moody, my great uncle), John Arnett, born 29 December 1900, married Hallie May Hart, mother of my cousin by a different husband), Hershel, born 1903, Howard, known as Buck, born 1905, Oma Lee, born 1907/1908 (married V. G. Kimbel, and they were parents of daughter Gerry), Kate, born 1910, and Lola Mae (married Roger Nobles), born 1916.
Matt Dowdy was the older sister of my great-aunt, Ocie (Dowdy) Alexander.

According to my Uncle Benford D. and others, Wesley and Luther were twins, and their father bound them out for a mule or a team of mules. He reclaimed them when he returned the mules. If they were twins, one of the usually given birthdays must be wrong.
One of Wesley's children was known as Buck.

Wife: Eliza T. Clark

3c. Bettie, born Jan 1887, married a Hudson.

3d. Nola J., born December 1889, married an Emerson.

3e. Lemon Joshua (or Joshua Lemon), married Margaret M. “Maggie” Bradshaw, daughter of Joshua Bradshaw and Nancy A. “Nannie” Powell, 31 July 1913. Josh and Nannie were also parents of my grandmother Lula Dell Bradshaw.

Lemon's and Maggie's children were Jesse Houston, born 15 August 1914 (married Lillian Elise Childress), Bessie, born 23 May 1916, Chester Lee, born 1917, James Lemon, known as J. L., born 9 July 1920, and Margie, born 1922.

3f. Anna Belle, born 10 December 1896: I know nothing more.

3g. William Ed, born 8 October 1884/1885, married Alice Emerson. They were parents of sons Harvey, Parvin, and Paul Ed, and daughters Mary and Ruth.
Census Data: 1900HnTNp255b: William Ed, 15, was listed as servant in John Buchanan's family, next door to James D. and Eliza.

2e. Elizabeth, born 1846: no more data

2f. Jonas J., born 1850, married Lydia Jane Mooney (no other data), and they were parents of Virginia J. Wilson, who married Warner Stephens, son of Benjamin Stephens and Mary Polk Alexander (who was my cousin, several degrees removed). Virginia's death cert., #999, verified her mother's name.

2g. General Lafayette, born 5 March 1852/1853, married Genia Dalton, according to the death certificate of a daughter, Alice Cornelia. Lafayette's parents were John Wilson and Sarah Kelly, per his death certificate, KY #2968. He was a widower.

John Brent's Second Marriage

John Brent's children with Mary Ann (Shipley) Chilcutt were H. Allison (male), born October 1874, Sonnie H., born 6 May 1875, and Marion R. (male), born December 1877.

Some people called Sonnie Sean and pronounced it as 'sawn,' but Sonnie was apparently his name. Sonnie was married, 14 October 1896, to Willie Jimerson (born 1879), daughter of Jefferson Jimerson (who was actually the son of Elijah Etheridge and Fanny [Ray] Jimerson) and Sarah Ann Nichols. Willie Jimerson was the stepsister of Warner Stephens, who married Sonnie's niece Virginia Wilson. Although she was his niece, Sonnie and Virgina were about the same age.

Martha Cochran, who was the widow of George D. Blane, and married to William D. Wilson, the oldest of John Brent's family with Sarah Kelly, had two Blane children, and one of them, Mary Ann Blane, married George W. Chilcutt, who was the son of John Brent's second wife, Mary Ann Shipley, and her first husband Thomas J. Chilcutt, who died in the Civil War. I don't have Mary Ann's and George's children listed even though they are my cousins through the Chilcutts.

Of the children of William D. Wilson and Martha Cochran, I have up to the present gathered data on only one, Susan, who married Isaac Henderson Adams, my great-grandmother's brother; however, I knew the family of William D.'s and Martha's son William Hardin Wilson well, although I knew him only as "Mr Bun Wilson." Bun's family included: Edna Earle, my third-grade teacher, Lela, who married into the Atkins family, Noble, whose wife Beth was nurse and assistant to the doctor who delivered me and a couple of my sisters, Doris Marie, usually called Tootsie, and 'Billy Bun' or 'Little Bun.' There were other sons and daughters whom I didn't know, although I met some of them. I knew Tootsie and Little Bun best because they were the younger children (to me the others were just adults!).

As I stated before, I don't have anything on three children of John Brent: Jesse G.(unless he was the Jesse who married Matilda Cochran), John W., or Elizabeth or their families.

I have quite a bit of data on several families I have mentioned as as having ties to the Wilson family: Paschalls (some data but Clarence McDaniel's files are the best, and I have probably given him almost everything I found for him to follow up on), Stagners (fairly extensive), Shipleys (only a bit), Clarks (very little), Dowdys (limited), Jimersons (extensive), Stephenses (extensive), Adamses (extensive), Bradshaws (extensive), and Chilcutts (extensive).
