An entry in Thomas Gore's bible, passed down to Isaac D. Gore, states, "Susannah Gore was born August the 10th 1796."
My sparse information about Susannah and Elijah comes from several sources, none of which have much: the record in Isaac's bible, Elijah McClure's will, Susannah's marriage to William Cooper, and federal censuses.
Elijah's will was signed and witnessed 26 April 1831, and the witnesses were Aaron McClure and Thomas McClure.(1) All signed as M Clure. Aaron and Thomas may have been brothers or cousins of Elijah. Although the will mentions a son Aaron, son Aaron appears to have been a minor in 1831 since there is a directive to provide him education for a year. Witness Aaron's being a brother or cousin is supported by the appearance on the 1830 census of an Aron McClure one family below that of Joshua Gore in adjacent Franklin County.
If Susannah, born in 1796, gave birth to their oldest child at age 16, that child would have been born in 1812, making him or her age 18 or 19 when the will was written. Although that child would probably have been old enough to be a witness in 1831, the 1820 census enumerated only female children in Elijah's and Susannah's family. The most likely possibility is that the witness was Lydia Gore's husband Thomas McClure; however, I can't be certain.
Susannah's and Elijah's children included the three daughters under 10 in their family on the 1820 census, Aaron, born between 1820 and 1831, and Sarah, born 30 May 1828 or 30 May 1829. It was necessary for me to follow a complicated path to her.(2)
After several years as a widow, Susannah married an older man, William Cooper, in 1841.I have found no citation that I am willing to accept for the death date of Susannah or William, although Susannah's death can probably be narrowed to between 1860 and 1870. She appeared in the family of Jacob and Sarah Corder on the 1860 federal census but was not in the family in 1870.
Although Elijah and Susannah are often said to be buried in Shady Grove Cemetery
(1): Elijah's will was proven during the January term of the Lincoln County Court. The entry in Thomas Sr's bible provides a more-exact data: "Elijah McClure deceased January the 1st 1836."
(2): While searching online for a reference to a death date for Susannah or Susan Gore, also using the variants Susannah McClure, or Susannah Cooper, I found a Lincoln County, TN, death certificate for Fannie Corder in which it was stated that her parents were Elisha McClure and Susan Gore. I looked for a marriage of Fannie or Frances McClure to a man named Corder but found only a marriage between Sarah McClure and Jacob B. Corder, again occurring in Lincoln County, TN. Find A Grave had a record for Sarah Corder that gave a death date matching that on the certificate but with the birth date differing by exactly one year. The clinching bit of information was the appearance of Susan Cooper in the family of Jacob and Sarah Corder on the 1860 census.
