Jefferson D. Gore and Three Wives

Jeff Gore and Wives

His parents: Isaac Darnell Gore and Margaret Wall
Caroline McClure's parents: Joshua McClure and Amy Caroline Marberry
Elizabeth Calloway Jimerson/Jamison's parents: Jeff Jimerson and Rebecca Ann Turner
Cora OGuin's parents: Records available but too difficult for me to determine

The family bible does not mention Jeff's birth, and it was necessary to consult his death certificate to find the date of his birth, 17 April 1861.

Jeff married first Amy Caroline "Calley" Marberry, his first cousin once-removed. Her grandmother Lydia (Gore) McClure was sister to Jeff's father Isaac Gore. Calley died very young, but, although the gravestone for her in Foundry Hill Cemetery states "Calley McClure Gore Died 1880," the date must be off by ten years since she and Jeff were not married until 1885. Before her early death, she gave birth to George Gore and Ludie Gore.

George married Alice Victory Alexander, daughter of Mary Elizabeth Gore and Joseph Rilely Alexander. Mary was the daughter of Isaac and his second wife Caroline Stagner. I have addressed their family in detail in the Alexander history, which can be found on-line. I knew George and Alice and visited them often in my youth.

Ludie Gore married first Porter OGuin, brother of Cora OGuin, Jeff Gore's third wife. She gave birth to two daughters, Constance and Grace, while married to Porter. She was married second to James W. "Bud" Warren, apparently until his death in 1951. She then married Mason Isaac Alexander, the son of Travis Buchanan Alexander and Emma Victoria Gore. Emma was the daughter of Isaac Gore, making Mason and Ludie first cousins. Ludie and Mason share a gravestone in Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence, MO. (findagrave.com)

After the death of his first wife, perhaps as a complication of childbirth, Jeff married Elizabeth Calloway "Lizzie" or "Callie" Jimerson. She and Jeff were not closely related, but his mother had family ties to the Jimerson family. Jeff and Lizzie or Callie had children including Virginia, Jeff, and Elzie Chatburn. Jeff and Elzie were almost beyond doubt the same person. On the 1900 census, Jeff's birth was stated to be May 1900, and Elzie's delayed certificate of birth gives his birth as being April 1900. Jeff never appears again on a record after 1900. Although the records I listed are some of those I checked myself, I got much of my information from Roxanne (Bridegan) Smith, who said she preferred to be called Roxie. She remembered Elzie fondly as her step-grandfather and also knew his sister Virginia.

Virginia married Porter O'Guin after his marriage with her sister Ludie ended. They had no children and apparently divorced before 1930 since she was not listed on the census with him and his daughters then. Virginia married Virgil Mosely. A very helpful Roxie kept me from a gross mistake which would have been identifying Virginia as the Virginia Lee Starnes who died in Dallas County, Texas, in 1987.

I'll quote from the story that Roxie has posted on Find A Grave: "Elzie Gore was the son of Jefferson Davis Gore and Callie Jimmerson. He was the widower of Roxanne Lee Moore. He had no children but was stepfather to Robert E. Bridegan, Joe E. Bridegan, Marion A. Bridegan Pierson, Jackie Dwight Bridegan and Donald W. Bridegan. Although the marker (his grave stone in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri)reads 'Elize Chapman Gore', his name is Elzie Chatburn Gore. His sister, Virginia Gore Mosley, was the informant to the cemetery for the marker and her own marker has the wrong birth date on it, making her born within 4 months of Elzie."

For much more information than I have, I refer the reader to Roxanne's Bridegan-O'Guin pages on ancestry.com:for data better than my own on Elzie Chatburn, his sister Virginia Lee, and their step-brother Harlan O'Guin, who was Roxie's grandfather on her mother's side.

Jeff's third marriage was to Cora O'Guin. Their children were Lila Mae, Marlie (or Marley) Lois, and Launa Idell.

Lila Gore married Buell Fleeman, but he died after only two years of marriage leaving 20-year-old Lila and their daughter Virginia and son Kenneth. Unsourced claims that Lila married Earl Wesley Sherman led me to look for evidence, which I found on the death certificate Lila Mae Gore Sherman. She and her husband apparently died when their house burned. I found not records of Virginia and Kenneth after their appearance with the Fleeman grandparents on the 1940 census; however, I suspect Virginia Isbell, who was the informant on Lila's and Earl's death certificates was the daughter.

Marlie married Elmer L. Summers when both were in their teens. They had two sons Elmer Lester and Frank. After Elmer's death in 1955 at age 45, Marlie married Paul Taylor.

Launa married George Cameron Walker. Although the marriage license application for Launa and George was dated 1943, his World War II draft registration, dated 16 October 1940 lists his spouse as Launa Idell Walker. I could almost no data on Launa and attempted to trace her through her husband George. I found that George had been married before Launa at age seventeen to a woman named Ellen and the was married to a woman named Mary at the time of his death. Launa was alive when her mother died in January 1955.

Calley McClure was the mother of Ludie. I'm uncertain about the statement about five children. The child listed as Virga was or became Virginia, and Jeff Jr called himself Elzie Chatburn.)
