Gore-Moorehead Families

Nancy Elizabeth Moorehead and Joshua Tolbert Gore

Her parents: James L. Moorehead and Mary Spencer
His parents: Isaac D. Gore and Sarah Caroline Stagner

An entry in the Gore-Moorehead bible reads "J. T. Gore and N. E. Moorhead was married Jan 14th 1875." Joshua Tolbert "Tolly" came eastward from Henry County where he was born and raised to Franklin County where his father Isaac spent his early life and where his Uncle Thomas still lived. Nancy Elizabeth "Liz" or "Lizzy" was the step-daughter of Thomas.

Tolly's and Liz's children included Mary Caroline, born 1875, Thomas Newton, born 1877, Rufus Tolbert, born 1880, Virginia Catherine, born 1882, Gustavus Lafayette, born 1884, Tera Ella, born 1886, Mamie Belle, born 1888, James Elmer, born 1890, Charles Dillon, born 1893, and William Marion, born 1896.

Mary Caroline married William Franklin "Frank" Moorehead in Moore County. Frank was the son of John N. Moorehead and Mary Waggoner and a brother of Charlie Moorehead who married Jane Alexander. Although Frank was listed only as W. F. on the marriage records and on the 1880 census, his descendant William "Billy" Moorehead confirmed that W. F. was William Franklin. Frank was born 14 May 1872 (Find A Grave, Winchester City Cemetery, Franklin County, TN), and the death record shows that he was born in Lincoln County. I don't have much data on most chidren from this family, but I'm aware that both George N. and William H. have Moorehead grandchildren.

Thomas N. "Newt" married Agnes Smith, who was probably Dora Agnes Smith since the 1910 shows the woman of the family as Dora A. with their having been married four years.

Rufus Tolbert died March 1906 at age 25. On Find-A-Grave website, an observer reports that that an inscription on his grave reads, "Tollie Son of J.T. & N.E. Gore." He seems never to have married.

Gus L. married Gertrude Collins(1) according to the marriage record, and they had several children.

Tera Ella, whose name usually appeared on records as Tera, married Francis Marion Smith. There were children from the marriage.

Mamie Belle married Hugh Thomas Wiseman. Although the children on the 1910 census were Hugh's from his first marriage, Belle and he had several children also.

James Elmer married Bartia Fears. There were several children from the marriage, and there are likely Gore-surname descendants although I have so far not been able to prove this.

Charles Dillon died single at age 22 as shown on Tennessee Certicate of Death #362, Moore County, 1915.

William Marion married Laura Bradford. My investigations reveal only one child, daughter Willie Nell (now deceased). Although there may have been other children, Willie Nell's obituary doesn't mention brothers or sisters.

Charles Wilson Moorehead and Emily Jane Alexander

Although they did not belong to Tolly Gore's and Lizzy Moorehead's immediate family, Charles W. and Jane, known to me as Uncle Charlie and Aunt Jane, were part of the larger Gore-Moorehead family. As stated in the section for Tolly and Lizzy, Charlie was the son of John N. Moorehead, who was James L. Moorehead's brother, and Jane was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Gore, who married Joseph Riley Alexander. Mary (Gore) Alexander was the daughter of Thomas Gore Jr's brother, Isaac D. An additional tie was Joe's mother Emilty Jane Stephens, who fit into the Gore-Stephens (Nancy Gore to John S. Stephens and Mary Gore to Eli A. Stephens) family, although I do not know her exact relationship.

Charlie's and Jane's children were William Thurman, Amber Mae, Joe Newton, Ellie Frank, Ruby A., Johnnie Alexander, Charlie Henry, Mary Lena, Delma, and Janie Bernice. While I am sure that I met all of them when I was a child, I had little interaction with any of their families except those of Charlie Henry and Johnnie. The vital data that I have on the children came from Tennessee records posted to the internet. Most, if not all, had delayed certificates of birth with the information taken -- I'm sure -- from Aunt Jane' bible and sworn to by others who knew them. I found marriage records for most on-line.

I remember that Ellie Frank, Charlie Henry, Mary Lena, and Janie Bernice were always referred to with both names when the Alexander family interacted with them. I'm unsure of the name any used in business or with friends.

Thurman was born 4 August 1905 [Tennessee Delayed Certificate of Birth #D-523054]. He married Ellen Farris. Amber was born 26 September 1906 [Tennessee Delayed Certificate of Birth #D-428008]. From my parents, I knew that her husband was Willie Holt, name probably William Thomas as listed in some documents. Joe, whom I don't remember at all, was born 12 June 1908 [Tennessee Delayed Certificate of Birth #D-85758]. Joe married Jane Towry. Ellie Frank was born 4 October 1909 [Tennessee Delayed Certificate of Birth #D-583348, which she signed as Mrs. J. R. Burrow]. Ruby was born 5 July 1911 [Gravestone in Harris Chapel Cemetery, Franklin County, TN, Find A Grave].

Tennessee Deaths and Burials, 1874–1955 FamilySearch, Salt Lake City, UT, 2009. Deceased: Nancy Smith, wid., death 30 July 1936, born Moore Co., TN, age 87; spouse Hence Collins, parents Josh and Margaret Smith

(Note 1): Social Security records for three of Gus's and Gertrude's children, Beatrice Gustava (or Gustava Beatrice), Annie Jewel, and Ovie Crystal report her maiden name as Jenny G. Smith, Jenny E. Smith, and Genny G. Smith. I have done some research on this situation but have not resolved the issue. I present my findings for anyone trying to reach a conclusion. On the 1930 census in Franklin County, Gus is incorrectly listed as George F. The male was almost certainly Gus since the wife was Gertrude, and the children in the family were those of Gus and Gertrude. In the family with Gus and Gertrude was her mother, listed as Nancy Smith, widow, age 80. The 1936 Tennessee death certificate for a Nancy Smith who matches the mother's data lists a spouse named Hence Collins, which is in agreement with the marriage record for L. H. Collins and Nancy Smith.
